2-3% of IBIT Inflows Come from Self-Custody Wallets
Approximately 2-3% of the inflows into BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) have been analyzed as funds moved from self-custody wallets. Investors are choosing whether to hold Bitcoin (BTC) directly or gain price exposure through an ETF. Bloomberg analyst Eric Balchunas explained that the ETF may be attractive to investors who value BTC's inflation-hedging properties. Conversely, it is viewed as less acceptable for investors who prioritize censorship resistance. IBIT is a BTC spot ETF managed by BlackRock, allowing investors to trade ETF shares in a brokerage account for price exposure instead of using personal wallets. Self-custody involves individuals managing their private keys and security, which can reduce reliance on exchanges but carries the risk of losing private keys. On the other hand, holding an ETF does not allow for direct use of BTC. The proportion of funds moved from self-custody to IBIT inflows may increase in the future, suggesting that ETFs could partially replace traditional BTC holding methods. However, it cannot be concluded that the importance of self-custody is diminishing. The ETF market offers advantages in accessibility and regulatory product structure, lowering entry barriers for traditional financial investors. This analysis indicates that the inflow of funds into BTC spot ETFs can be interpreted as a sign of changing custody methods.
