+500% in 24 Hours: A Look Back at the Largest Chinese IPO Since 2010

Strike while the iron is hot. On Monday, July 27, 2026, ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) made its grand debut on the STAR Market in Shanghai, China's tech stock exchange. The result: a surge of over 500% in a single session. The DRAM chip manufacturer (dynamic random-access memory, which powers everything from smartphones to AI servers) has suddenly joined the exclusive club of the world's most highly valued tech giants, driven by a rush that even Nvidia's AI chips did not experience at their inception. Key points of this article: * CXMT made a spectacular entry on the STAR Market in Shanghai with an increase of over 500% in a single session, becoming the most valued company in the Chinese market. * The exceptional increase in demand for memory chips, exacerbated by the race for AI data centers, has propelled CXMT to the status of a strategic national champion for China in the semiconductor field. Based in Hefei, CXMT set its IPO price at 8.66 yuan per share. According to CNBC, the company raised 57.92 billion yuan, approximately 8.6 billion dollars. This makes it the largest fundraising in mainland China since 2010 and the largest in Asia for the year 2026. At the close, the stock peaked at around 52 yuan, six times its IPO price. The company's market capitalization now hovers around 3.3 to 3.5 trillion yuan, approximately 489 billion dollars according to the South China Morning Post. CXMT thus becomes, overnight, the most valued listed company in the entire Chinese market. Not bad for a player that held only 7.67% of the global DRAM market by the end of 2025. Why such a frenzy? Because the demand for memory chips has exploded with the race for AI data centers, and the supply is not keeping up. Foundries are prioritizing their production towards the most profitable GPUs and AI chips, leaving the rest of the market dry. CXMT plans to use most of the funds raised to mass-produce its memory wafers, literally the slices of silicon that give rise to chips once cut and etched. This is a way to respond to a demand that far exceeds available production capacities. Beijing is also aware: having a national DRAM champion is another card in the technological tug-of-war with Washington over semiconductors. However, such triple-digit surges in a single session can make any investor who has seen a bubble deflate wary. CXMT is not an isolated case. The global memory chip sector is now worth 4.1 trillion dollars, a staggering figure in itself. However, China is playing its own tune, largely cut off from the Western ecosystem due to U.S. export restrictions. CXMT therefore has little choice: it must grow quickly, even if it means showing valuation multiples that would make any Wall Street analyst blanch. The appetite for Chinese tech IPOs is not limited to chips. DeepSeek is also preparing for its IPO, targeting a valuation of 50 billion dollars. Two signals pointing in the same direction: Beijing wants its own listed champions in artificial intelligence, from silicon to model, without relying on either American markets or Taiwanese or South Korean technology.
