Alphabet's Google Search AI Overview has surpassed 2.5 billion monthly active users. The number of users utilizing the AI mode and the Gemini app is also increasing, with facility investment burdens expected to reach $205 billion by 2026. Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced on May 19 during the Google I/O 2026 keynote that AI mode users have exceeded 1 billion. The monthly active users of the Gemini app increased from 400 million in April 2025 to over 900 million in May 2026. According to the second-quarter results announced on July 22, the monthly active users of the Gemini app rose to 950 million, with second-quarter revenue reaching $119.8 billion, a 24% increase year-over-year. Google Cloud revenue increased by 82% to $24.8 billion. The AI Overview provides summarized answers to user questions, while the AI mode transforms the search bar into an interactive Q&A format. Alphabet is integrating AI into its existing services, which could lead to feature deployment leveraging a large user base. However, the increase in user numbers does not directly translate to improved profitability, as the high computational demands of AI search and the burden of data center investments accompany it. Alphabet has raised its 2026 facility investment guidance to between $195 billion and $205 billion. With simultaneous revenue growth and cost increases, further confirmation is needed on how the increase in AI users will convert into advertising rates and cloud contracts.
