Anthropic Pushes for $15 Billion AI Data Center Construction
Anthropic is seeking funding for the construction of a $15 billion data center in Texas. Google is expected to guarantee part of Anthropic's rent and power usage fees. According to the Wall Street Journal, Nexus Data Center is negotiating a $15 billion loan with a banking group led by Morgan Stanley, with the deal potentially being announced as early as today. Google has agreed to guarantee four data center lease agreements and part of a power purchase agreement (PPA) in case Anthropic fails to meet its debt obligations. The loan will consist of a $14 billion bridge loan and revolving credit facility. A 1.6 GW natural gas power plant is also set to be constructed at the Hubbard campus. Anthropic plans to deploy Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) at this facility. This project is part of Anthropic's strategy to secure its own data centers, moving away from leasing servers from cloud providers, with the company aiming to achieve at least 10 GW of AI computing power. This deal illustrates a new financial structure that leverages the financial health of large tech companies and semiconductor firms to support infrastructure investments for AI companies.
