As Brent Oil Approaches $100, Concerns Over Interest Rates Rise in Global Markets
As the price of Brent crude oil approaches $100 per barrel, concerns have intensified regarding central banks' continued interest rate hikes to control inflation. While global stocks have declined, the market's focus has shifted to tensions in the Middle East and the U.S. inflation data set to be released on Friday. Oil prices surged rapidly due to attacks on facilities in southern Saudi Arabia. With Brent crude surpassing $98, strong purchases from China have increased supply constraints. The rise in energy prices has brought monetary policy expectations to the forefront. The U.S. inflation report to be published on Friday could be decisive for the Federal Reserve's (Fed) interest rate decision. The expectation that the European Central Bank and the Bank of Japan will raise interest rates this month has been reflected in market pricing. Copper prices also hit record highs amid expectations of limited short-term supply and the U.S. imposing tariffs on refined metal imports. While the dollar generally remained stable, the yen gained 1% against the dollar. The dollar/yen exchange rate fell below 154, causing the Japanese currency to reach its strongest level since February. The expectation that the Bank of Japan will adopt a tighter monetary policy supported the yen's rise. U.S. Treasury bonds lost value ahead of a $58 billion three-year bond auction. This intense borrowing schedule occurs during a period when long-term bond yields are hovering near their highest levels in recent years.
