Coinbase Supports Expanding Access to AI Models for the Crypto Industry

Coinbase, Blockstream, and Strategy are backing an initiative led by the Bitcoin Policy Institute aimed at expanding access to advanced AI models for defenders in the crypto industry for cybersecurity purposes. The event took place on August 10, gathering over 40 organizations from the digital asset ecosystem and open-source software. The proposal calls for AI labs to provide early access to advanced models where appropriate, sufficient computing power for ongoing security reviews, and a protected environment for private or confidential code. The group also advocates for qualification standards that do not exclude smaller non-profits and independent maintainers. During the discussion, Anchor Watch CEO Rob Hamilton reported that OpenAI continued to block him from conducting security research even after he completed the verification process, leading to increased scrutiny of researchers. Hamilton noted that researchers focused on harm reduction may be marginalized, while malicious actors face no such restrictions. Meanwhile, OpenAI and Anthropic maintain initiatives for such access, with OpenAI expanding its Daybreak initiative for cybersecurity, and Anthropic operating Project Glasswing, which provides secure access to advanced AI resources. The Ethereum Foundation security team stated that collaborative AI agents have identified real software vulnerabilities but still require human verification to filter out false positives and determine fixes.
