Corruption Investigations Begin in Hungary Amid Orbán's Era
Official investigations into corruption and systemic violations linked to Prime Minister Viktor Orbán have commenced in Hungary. The primary goal is to hold accountable officials from the previous regime and restore access to frozen European Union funds. Prime Minister Péter Madár is fulfilling the campaign promises of his party, "Tisza," which won the elections in April 2026. A special commission began its work on September 2, 2026, and will investigate three areas: 1) the circumstances surrounding the pardon of a convicted individual for concealing child abuse, which led to the resignation of former President Katalin Novák; 2) chronic failures in the child protection system that left children in care homes homeless or victims of crimes; 3) corruption within the National Bank of Hungary. Lawmaker Márton Melety-Barna noted that the investigations aim to establish political accountability and identify the reasons behind chronic underfunding of social protection. To regain access to the frozen EU funding of €16 billion, Hungary must overcome corruption and restore the rule of law. An agency has also been established to recover funds stolen during Orbán's time.
