According to statistics from Hong Kong law enforcement, there were a total of 25 investment scam cases involving online romance reported from July 24 to 30, with total losses nearing HKD 70 million. In one major online romance investment scam, a woman in her fifties, who works in insurance, was deceived by her online romantic partner, who claimed to be a "car dealer," into investing in virtual currency. The victim discovered that the investment platform showed account earnings exceeding 800%, but her withdrawal request was denied. Subsequently, both the online partner and the so-called investment expert went offline, and it was ultimately confirmed that she had been defrauded of over HKD 26 million. The police remind investors to be cautious of investment projects recommended by individuals they meet through social platforms, especially those involving virtual currencies, promises of high returns, or transactions through unfamiliar platforms. They advise not to relax financial security precautions due to feelings or trust.
