Left His Tesla Cybertruck Plugged In for Two Weeks and It Wouldn’t Turn On: What Really Happened?

A Tesla Cybertruck remained plugged into the charger for two weeks while its owner was on vacation. Upon returning home in Arizona, the vehicle was unresponsive, could not be turned on, and the Tesla app indicated that it had lost communication with the truck several days prior.

The incident raised concerns among other electric vehicle owners, as the initial suspicion was that high temperatures and prolonged charging had damaged the battery. However, the technical review ruled out that hypothesis.

After assistance from the official service, the vehicle was towed to a repair center, where specialists identified the true source of the failure.

The case involved AJ Esguerra, who left his Cybertruck plugged in before traveling for two weeks. Upon returning, he discovered that the truck was unresponsive to commands and that the app had stopped communicating with the vehicle eleven days earlier.

Faced with the inability to start it, the owner shared his experience in a Cybertruck user group and requested assistance through the official Tesla app. The technical service managed to partially reactivate the system and transported the unit for a complete diagnosis.

Since the vehicle had been parked in Arizona for several days of high temperatures, the owner believed that the extreme heat, combined with constant charging, had affected the main battery. However, Tesla ruled out that possibility. According to the diagnosis, leaving the Cybertruck plugged in for extended periods did not cause the malfunction. In fact, the manufacturer recommends keeping the vehicle plugged in when not in use for several days to maintain charge levels and properly manage battery temperature.

After inspecting the truck, technicians determined that the fault was in the power converter and not in the high-voltage battery. That component had a failure that prevented the vehicle from functioning normally. According to the owner, Tesla repaired it at no cost, considering that the malfunction was not caused by the use of the vehicle, nor by being plugged into the charger. Once the component was replaced, the Cybertruck returned to normal operation.

Electric vehicles have two different electrical systems. The high-voltage battery powers the motor and allows propulsion, while a low-voltage system supplies energy to computers, locks, displays, and other electronic modules.

When the latter system fails, the vehicle can become completely immobilized even if the main battery retains sufficient charge. In the case of Esguerra's Cybertruck, the problem was related to that circuit and not with the battery intended for driving.

Tesla's own manual states that the Cybertruck can remain plugged in for long periods and that the system automatically interrupts charging when it reaches the limit set by the user. It also recommends maintaining a level close to 50% during prolonged storage and avoiding keeping the battery fully charged or discharged for extended periods.

The case, therefore, does not demonstrate that leaving an electric vehicle connected is harmful. According to the manufacturer's diagnosis, it was a specific failure of the power converter that coincided with the period when the truck was parked during the vacation.
