Lightning Labs Launches L402 Bitcoin Proxy Payment Website
Lightning Labs launched a dedicated website for the L402 protocol on Wednesday, positioning it as a channel for AI agents to make payments in Bitcoin. L402 allows agents to pay with Bitcoin and complete identity verification without the need for accounts, intermediaries, or human involvement, aiming to support machine-to-machine commerce. The new addition is the website itself, not the protocol, which is the Lightning HTTP 402 protocol that has already existed in Lightning Labs' tech stack. Its standard implementation, Aperture, is currently used by the non-custodial exchange service Lightning Loop. This mechanism reuses the HTTP 402 status code, where the server returns a 402 response along with a validation header containing a token and a Lightning invoice when the client requests a restricted interface. After the client makes a payment, it accesses the interface using the token and payment original, allowing the server to complete the verification without querying the payment database.
