Pezeshkian Emphasizes the Need for Negotiations Amid U.S. Sanctions
Masoud Pezeshkian, the Iranian president, stated that the deadlock with the United States must come to an end. In a speech on the 23rd, he emphasized that there are no clauses equivalent to surrender in the memorandum of understanding with the U.S., indicating Iran's unwillingness to make concessions. Pezeshkian mentioned that attracting investment is difficult amid the possibility of renewed conflict. This statement came shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump's warning of an 'economic D-Day.' U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bencik warned of the possibility of secondary sanctions on countries and companies dealing with Iran, stating that the U.S. government would do everything in its power. Secondary sanctions could also affect third-country companies that trade with the sanctioned nation. The Iranian Foreign Ministry responded by saying that the U.S. sanctions pressure is a repeated tactic, and while they have not completely closed the door on negotiations, significant gaps still exist. The Strait of Hormuz is a key point in this conflict, and Iran and Oman are discussing measures to manage shipping traffic. Pezeshkian's remarks are interpreted as a signal that the economic difficulties cannot be ignored, and it has been reported that Iranian officials are discussing ways to break the deadlock.
