From August 16 to 31, Romania will temporarily reduce the excise tax on standard diesel fuel by 20%. This decision was made in response to a 34.13% increase in Platts diesel quotes and a 23.01% rise in the average price at gas stations. The reduction in excise will amount to 560.86 lei per 1000 liters, which corresponds to 663.75 lei per ton. The new excise rates will be: 2243.43 lei per 1000 liters and 2654.99 lei per ton. The mechanism of Law No. 162/2026 allows for adjustments to the excise tax based on global prices to curb the rising costs of goods and services in transportation and logistics. Romania's Finance Minister Alexandru Nazare noted that this temporary intervention aims to alleviate pressure on the population and businesses. The government plans to reassess the market in two weeks for further decisions. Romania previously ranked first in the EU for the rate of increase in diesel prices, which rose by 7.5% in one week, increasing the cost of a full tank by 57 lei.
