Romanian F-16s Shoot Down Three Drones Over Three Days

The Romanian Air Force shot down three drones over three days from July 24 to 26 near its borders and over the Black Sea. On July 24 at 3:39 PM, a drone was detected 20 km east of Sulina, and at 5:02 PM, an F-16 fighter jet shot it down. On the 25th, at 2:22 PM, a new unauthorized incursion was detected, leading to two F-16s shooting down another drone. On the 26th, at 4:13 PM, a drone was shot down 12 km northeast of Sulina. The drone shot down on the first day was classified as a Russian Shahed-type, but the origins of the drones on the 25th and 26th are under investigation. The Romanian President stated on July 26 that incursions into the airspace are 'unacceptable and intolerable.' Romania shares a 650 km border with Ukraine and has experienced repeated drone incursions since the war began. The Romanian Ministry of Defense reported 33 cases of Russian drone incursions since the outbreak of the war, with three of the 18 incursions in 2026 being shot down by F-16s. NATO announced on July 24 that the interceptions were conducted under NATO command. NATO plans to invest over $40 billion in counter-drone capabilities over the next five years. The Romanian Ministry of Defense stated that there were no casualties or ground damage from the downed drones.
