Surge in Bond Yields in the United States, United Kingdom, and Japan
The yield on the 10-year Treasury bond in the United States has reached 4.80%, its highest since January 2025, while the 30-year rate exceeds 5.2%, a level not seen since 2007. In the United Kingdom, the 10-year rate surpasses 5.2%, a peak since 2008. In the eurozone, the German Bund is around 3.3% and the French OAT is above 4%. In Japan, the 10-year rate has hit 3% for the first time since 1996. This surge in rates is driven by rising oil prices and a shift in central bank policies, with expectations of rate hikes from the U.S. Federal Reserve and the ECB. Governments are increasing deficits, and major tech companies are issuing debt massively, leading to heightened borrowing demand. The rise in rates impacts sensitive assets, such as tech stocks and real estate, while making safe investments more attractive. Savers need to diversify their investments and monitor the Fed and ECB meetings in September, as well as the evolution of oil prices.
