50-60 Vessels Stuck on the Danube Awaiting Passage to Ukrainian Ports

Near the Sulina Canal in Romanian waters, a traffic jam of 50-60 vessels has formed, waiting to pass to Ukrainian Danube ports. Some ships have been in line for over a week. The situation worsened after the halt of Ukrainian deep-water ports, leading to a rerouting of cargo flows to the Danube. The problem arose when the number of vessels exceeded 20. The main reason for the delays is the shortage of Romanian pilots, as well as the slow work of the customs commission in Sulina, where processing one vessel takes from one to two hours. The delays have increased associated costs: for a vessel with a deadweight of about 6,000 tons, daily demurrage has risen from $4,000 to $6,000-7,000. Experts note that the current crisis resembles the events of 2022 when the Danube route faced its first surge in traffic. Effective coordination between Ukrainian and Romanian administrations has yet to be established. Russian attacks on civilian vessels and port infrastructure have halted traffic to the ports of Greater Odessa, threatening the export of over 30 million tons of Ukrainian agricultural products.
