Ukraine Proposes to Unblock €200 Billion of Russian Assets in the EU
Ukraine is urging EU countries to resume discussions on the use of frozen Russian assets, proposing a phased release of funds and international guarantees. Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister Vsevolod Chentsov stated at a meeting of European affairs ministers in Dublin the need to cover the deficits in defense and civilian budgets amid the ongoing invasion. Ukraine suggests considering smaller amounts of funding to initiate the unblocking of assets, which total over €200 billion and are held in the Belgian depository Euroclear. The Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and Sweden have previously called on the European Commission to develop new options for unblocking. A representative of the Belgian Foreign Minister confirmed the country's unchanged position, while a spokesperson for the European Commission noted that the focus is on implementing the €90 billion loan.
