US VC Dimension's Assessment After Researching China's AI Industry
After a week of research in China, US venture capital firm Dimension released an internal memo stating that open weight models from China have entered the production chain of American AI companies. Dimension emphasized that American labs first train cutting-edge models, Chinese labs absorb the capabilities and release open weight models, and then American application companies utilize these models for training, ultimately selling the final products to American enterprises. This process is summarized as "two trips across the Pacific." However, despite the increase in usage, revenue has not proportionally remained with Chinese model companies. Dimension pointed out that China is receiving "the workload from the West, but not the revenue from the West." Open weight models can be deployed on different platforms, leading to service fees charged by American inference companies such as Fireworks, Baseten, and Modal. Dimension believes that the AI industries of China and the US can no longer be simply divided into two independent systems, even though hardware like chips is decoupling, models, data, inference services, and software frameworks continue to flow across borders.
