White House Copper Tariff Plan Undecided as Officials Weigh Costs Against Mining Benefits
The White House has yet to make a decision on tariffs for refined copper, as officials are weighing the potential benefits of encouraging domestic mining against the possibility that rising copper prices could increase manufacturing costs. At this time, the government is focused on affordability issues ahead of the midterm elections in November, with Trump and Republican lawmakers under pressure to demonstrate that economic policies are reducing costs for American consumers and businesses. Copper prices have surged to record highs amid expectations that Trump will impose tariffs on refined copper products such as cathode copper and copper concentrates produced from mines, leading traders and industrial buyers to rush to build inventories in the U.S., creating one of the largest copper stockpiles globally. A White House official stated that the government has not yet made a final decision on tariffs and confirmed that the Department of Commerce had submitted the latest updates to Trump ahead of the set deadline of June 30. The official noted that the government continues to evaluate all options to bring copper and other key manufacturing back to the U.S. This indicates that tariffs are not a foregone conclusion, despite market expectations that the U.S. may expand existing tariffs to refined copper.
