China’s Central Bank Boosts Gold Reserves With August Purchase

- The main variable to watch is whether China sustains this faster pace of accumulation after a much smaller purchase in February. A continued step-up would keep attention on official-sector demand for hard assets.
- Markets should also watch whether other reserve managers show a similar preference for gold over traditional reserve assets as inflation and currency concerns remain part of the macro backdrop.
- For crypto markets, the signal is indirect. The relevance lies in whether stronger central-bank demand for alternative stores of value reinforces broader interest in non-fiat assets, rather than in any immediate trading effect.
The People’s Bank of China added 650,000 ounces of gold to its reserves in August, bringing total holdings to 76.73 million troy ounces and marking its largest monthly purchase since October 2023, according to the figures cited in the latest reserve update.
The August purchase amounted to roughly 20.2 tons, based on the reported increase from the prior month. The update said China’s gold reserves were valued at $350.08 billion at the end of August, up from $306.35 billion a month earlier.
The latest increase extended China’s gold-buying streak to 22 consecutive months. The source also said the August addition was more than 21 times larger than the 30,000-ounce purchase reported for February, highlighting a sharp acceleration in monthly buying.
The reserve build came during a period of rising global gold prices. The source said gold gained about 10% in August before losing momentum late in the month, and had slipped 0.27% since the start of September.
Some of the market context cited around the reserve move linked demand for gold and Bitcoin to concern over fiat-currency weakness, inflation risk, and U.S. debt management. Those broader macro explanations remain part of the market narrative around hard-asset demand, but the confirmed development here is the central bank’s reported increase in gold holdings.
Why It Matters
China’s latest gold purchase matters because central-bank reserve decisions are closely watched as a signal of how major economies are positioning against inflation, currency volatility, and dependence on traditional reserve assets. A larger monthly addition from the People’s Bank of China adds weight to the view that official demand for gold remains firm even at elevated prices.
For crypto markets, the significance is mainly thematic. When large institutions and sovereign actors increase exposure to hard assets, that can strengthen the broader store-of-value discussion that often includes Bitcoin, even if the direct transmission to crypto trading is limited.
