LayerZero said it has launched Akita, a quantum-resistant polynomial commitment scheme designed to protect zero-knowledge proof systems against potential quantum computing attacks, with Jolt zkVM as its first major deployment scenario.

According to LayerZero, Akita is a lattice-based post-quantum polynomial commitment scheme. The company said it has open-sourced the system so that other proof systems seeking post-quantum security can adopt it.

Polynomial commitments are a core building block in many zero-knowledge proof systems because they help compress computation into short proofs that can be verified efficiently. In this case, LayerZero framed Akita as a way to preserve that functionality while strengthening resistance to future quantum threats.

The first major deployment scenario disclosed by LayerZero is Jolt, a zero-knowledge proof system developed in collaboration with a16z crypto. LayerZero said Akita produces proof files of 65 KB to 80 KB, compared with more than 200 KB for hash-based post-quantum proof schemes. It also said Akita improves Jolt’s proof speed by 2 to 3 times and cuts memory usage by about 2 times, while supporting sub-linear memory overhead.

LayerZero did not disclose additional deployment partners, a timeline for broader integrations, or whether Akita is already being used in live production environments beyond the initial Jolt deployment scenario. With limited supporting background available, the current announcement is best read as a technical launch with an early implementation case rather than a broad industry rollout.

Why It Matters

The announcement matters because it targets a difficult trade-off in crypto infrastructure: adding post-quantum protection without making zero-knowledge systems too large or slow to use. If those performance claims hold in wider deployment, Akita could strengthen the case that quantum-resistant cryptography can be integrated into practical proof systems rather than remaining a research goal.

It also puts more attention on the security roadmap for zero-knowledge infrastructure. As zk systems move deeper into scaling, verification, and cross-chain applications, developers may face growing pressure to show not just efficiency today, but resilience against longer-term cryptographic risks.
