Liquid Issues Emergency Elements Update With Phased Recovery Plan

  1. The main near-term signal is whether Blockstream can complete testing of the first two recovery phases and restore block production without introducing further disruption.
  2. Anchoring remains the key operational constraint. Liquid said anchoring will stay suspended at first and only resume after network status is fully restored and funds are returned, making that restart an important marker of full normalization.
  3. Users and operators should also watch for official implementation updates, since Liquid said the recovery sequence could still change based on test results. That leaves timing and exact execution risk unresolved for now.

Liquid Network said on September 9 that it released an emergency software update, Elements v23.3.4, and urged all Liquid node operators to upgrade immediately after identifying a proof verification cache vulnerability.

The update is intended to fix a vulnerability tied to proof verification cache handling in Elements, the software stack used by the network. Liquid said the release had gone through multiple rounds of review and named Bitcoin Red Team and Alpen Labs among the teams involved in that process.

Alongside the software release, Liquid published a preliminary recovery plan. Under that plan, the network would first restart block production while keeping anchoring operations suspended. It would then re-execute verified transactions before eventually resuming anchoring once the network is fully restored and funds have been returned.

Blockstream is testing the first two phases of that plan in parallel, according to the update. Liquid also said the final implementation order may still be adjusted depending on those test results, leaving parts of the restart sequence subject to change.

The network also warned users about scam activity around the incident, saying fake update websites had already appeared. Liquid told users to rely on official channels for information and said they should not transfer funds or share private keys or recovery phrases with strangers.

Why It Matters

This is more than a routine software patch because it combines a security fix with an active network recovery process. For infrastructure users, the immediate issue is not just whether nodes update quickly, but whether core functions can be restored in stages without further operational complications.

The episode also highlights a familiar stress point for crypto infrastructure during emergencies: technical remediation and user protection have to happen at the same time. The warning about fake update sites shows how security incidents can quickly expand beyond software risk into phishing and fund-loss risk for participants trying to respond under time pressure.
