Ethereum (ETH) is currently the world's second-largest cryptocurrency project by market capitalization, trailing only Bitcoin. Since its inception in 2015, Ethereum has evolved into the leading blockchain platform for decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, non-fungible tokens (NFT), and the broader Web3 ecosystem. The importance of Ethereum is so significant that many experts consider it the “backbone” of the future Web3 vision. For Vietnamese investors, Ethereum remains a top choice in 2025 due to its solid position and growth potential. In this article, WEEX will help you understand why Ethereum 2025 is an opportunity you shouldn't miss and how to buy ETH on WEEX to seize it.

What is Ethereum? Its Role in DeFi, NFT, and Web3

Ethereum is a decentralized layer-1 blockchain platform that enables the deployment of smart contracts and the building of decentralized applications (DApp) without the need for centralized servers or intermediaries. Instead of operating on centralized servers like traditional services, Ethereum runs on a network of thousands of peer-to-peer computers globally to verify transactions. This provides transparency, security, and decentralization, free from the control of any single organization. Consequently, developers can create various decentralized applications such as games, social networks, and especially decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms or non-fungible tokens (NFT) without relying on banks or intermediary financial institutions.

Ethereum was founded based on the vision of programming genius Vitalik Buterin, who published the first whitepaper in November 2013 at just 19 years old. The project quickly attracted other prominent developers, such as Gavin Wood, Charles Hoskinson, and Joseph Lubin. Following its ICO fundraising phase in 2014, Ethereum officially launched its beta in July 2015, paving the way for the first DApps on the platform. Since then, Ethereum has undergone many significant development milestones and become the “cradle” of DeFi—the origin point for a series of decentralized financial innovations such as lending/borrowing, decentralized exchanges (DEX), and decentralized stablecoins (MakerDAO). Furthermore, the NFT movement that exploded in 2021-2022 is also tied to Ethereum, as most iconic NFT collections (CryptoPunks, Bored Ape Yacht Club, etc.) were born on this blockchain.

In Vietnam, Ethereum has a very vibrant community of users and developers. Many blockchain projects initiated by Vietnamese founders also choose Ethereum as their platform or integrate with it. For instance, the NFT game Axie Infinity—which once caused a global sensation—uses its own sidechain but still relies on Ethereum's ERC-721 token standard for in-game items. Additionally, the stablecoin USDT (Tether)—a popular medium of exchange in Vietnam—initially ran on the Ethereum network before expanding to other chains. These practical applications demonstrate that Ethereum is not just “theoretical” technology but is actively impacting the digital economy in Vietnam.

Ethereum's Blockchain Technology: From Proof of Stake to the Cancun-Deneb Upgrade and Layer-2

Ethereum is renowned for its ability to continuously innovate its technology to maintain its leading position. Initially, Ethereum used the Proof of Work (PoW) consensus algorithm similar to Bitcoin, but in September 2022, it switched to Proof of Stake (PoS) through a historic upgrade called The Merge. The Merge helped Ethereum reduce its network energy consumption by 99.95%, addressing environmental concerns and opening a new chapter in efficiency. Reports indicate that after The Merge, a transaction on Ethereum consumes only 1/20,000 the energy it did previously—a major step toward a green and sustainable blockchain. Beyond energy savings, the PoS mechanism improves throughput and network security as hundreds of thousands of participants stake to protect the blockchain rather than relying on a few large mining pools.

Following The Merge, Ethereum's development roadmap has focused heavily on scalability to address the “blockchain trilemma” regarding transaction fees and speed. In December 2024, Ethereum successfully deployed the Cancun-Deneb upgrade (collectively known as Dencun), bringing the Proto-Danksharding (EIP-4844) improvement—a breakthrough feature for data scaling. Specifically, EIP-4844 introduces a blob transaction type containing “large data arrays” attached to block, allowing for the temporary storage of massive amounts of data at a very low cost. Thanks to this blob mechanism, Layer-2 solutions on Ethereum (such as Arbitrum and Optimism) have a cheaper place to store transaction data, thereby significantly reducing transaction fees for end-users. In other words, Cancun-Deneb is specifically designed to help L2 networks operate more efficiently—with lower costs and higher speeds—thereby enhancing the user experience with cheap gas fees and fast processing times. In fact, after the upgrade, average transaction fees on L2 rollups have dropped significantly to just a few US cents, opening an era where Ethereum could serve hundreds of thousands of transactions per second in the near future.

Parallel to Layer-1 upgrades, Ethereum's Layer-2 ecosystem has also exploded in recent years. Prominent L2 solutions like Arbitrum and Optimism have attracted a large user base due to fees that are dozens of times cheaper than L1 and near-instant processing speeds. The “rollup-centric” strategy—relying on L2 networks to scale rather than making major changes on L1—allows Ethereum to maintain high security and decentralization at the base layer while achieving flexibility and speed at secondary layers, enabling DeFi and NFT applications to thrive while still leveraging Ethereum's security.

ETH Token: Mechanism, Deflationary Nature, Staking, and Long-Term Value

On the Ethereum network, ETH is not just a cryptocurrency but acts as the “fuel” that powers the entire ecosystem. Every transaction or operation on Ethereum (running smart contracts, minting NFT, interacting with DeFi, etc.) requires paying a gas fee in ETH to the network. A portion of this fee is permanently burned according to the EIP-1559 mechanism (applied since August 2021), making ETH a deflationary asset when demand is high. Statistics show that thanks to EIP-1559, over 4.57 million ETH have been burned from the supply to date. After the PoS merge, the issuance of new ETH (from block rewards and staking) dropped sharply, and at times, there has even been negative net issuance—meaning more ETH is burned than created, causing the total supply of ETH to shrink rather than inflate. Currently, the total supply of Ethereum is approximately 120 million ETH and tends to be stable, even decreasing slightly each year. This is a key differentiator compared to most fiat currencies and many other cryptocurrencies, making ETH an asset that becomes increasingly scarce over time.

Beyond the deflationary mechanism, ETH staking is another important economic feature. With the PoS mechanism, anyone holding at least 32 ETH can become a validator by locking that ETH into the network to participate in verifying transactions and securing the blockchain. In return, stakers receive staking rewards in the form of newly issued ETH along with priority fees from users. The current annual staking yield for ETH fluctuates between 3-5% depending on network conditions. This return is attractive compared to traditional savings interest rates, making ETH not only a capital appreciation investment but also a source of passive income for long-term holders. Notably, after the Shanghai upgrade (April 2023), Ethereum allowed for flexible unstaking of ETH, giving investors more peace of mind when staking as their assets are not permanently locked.

Regarding long-term value, ETH is likened to the “oil of the Web3 economy”—if Bitcoin is digital gold for storing value, Ethereum is the fuel powering the entire decentralized ecosystem. The increasing demand for Ethereum in DeFi, NFT, metaverse, etc., is the sustainable driver for ETH's value. Even traditional financial institutions are increasingly interested in ETH as a serious investment asset. In 2023, a series of spot Ethereum ETF applications were filed with the US SEC, and the first funds have begun attracting hundreds of millions of USD in institutional inflows. For example, BlackRock's ETH ETF recorded 136.4 million USD in inflows in one week—a sign that professional investors believe in Ethereum's potential. By early 2025, the US government even included ETH in its national reserve fund alongside Bitcoin, XRP, etc., a move confirming confidence in Ethereum's critical role in the future of digital finance. These factors, combined with its deflationary nature and massive ecosystem, lead many experts to predict that the price of ETH in 2025 could continue to grow steadily. Holding ETH is considered a reasonable long-term investment strategy to both preserve capital (due to limited, deflationary supply) and gain profit from the growth of the entire blockchain industry.

Ethereum's Roadmap and Future: Pectra, Danksharding, Verkle Trees, and MEV Mitigation

Ethereum does not stop at its current achievements but always looks to the future with an ambitious upgrade roadmap. After The Merge and Dencun, in 2025, Ethereum continues to advance with a major upgrade called Pectra. Pectra is essentially the combination of two parallel upgrades: Prague (for the execution layer) and Electra (for the consensus layer)—merged into a single hard fork. Expected to be deployed around May 2025, Pectra brings over a dozen important EIP proposals, laying the technical foundation for the next decade of Ethereum. Notable improvements include:

  • Account Abstraction (EIP-7702): Allows for more flexible smart wallets. Users can set up smart contracts as an “extension” for their regular wallet address, opening up the possibility of delegating gas fee payments, recovering wallets when private keys are lost, or performing cross-chain transactions easily. This feature will provide a smoother experience for general users, making the use of Web3 applications on Ethereum as safe and convenient as Web2.

  • Staking upgrades (EIP-7251 & EIP-7002): Pectra increases the maximum staked ETH limit per validator from 32 to 2,048 ETH. Consequently, operators of multiple nodes can consolidate them into one large node, reducing network load and reducing risk (previously, if you wanted to stake 320 ETH, you had to run 10 nodes; now you only need 1). At the same time, Ethereum allows for withdrawing staking rewards directly on the execution layer (without going through the slow withdrawal mechanism as before), making staking more liquid. These changes promise to attract more ETH staking investors as the process of participating and withdrawing capital becomes more flexible.

  • Performance and data optimization: Many other EIPs in Pectra focus on improving EVM performance (EIP-7692 – new EVM object format) and reducing storage load (EIP-2935 – optimizing history verification). These improvements make running an Ethereum node lighter, moving closer to the goal of a stateless client in the future, thanks to which Verkle Trees—a new tree structure for compressing state data—will soon be implemented (expected in the next The Verge phase). Verkle Trees combined with SNARK technology will allow even low-spec devices to verify the Ethereum blockchain effectively, enhancing decentralization.

  • Throughput expansion (Danksharding): While Proto-Danksharding in Dencun was just a stepping stone, Ethereum's ultimate goal is full Danksharding—thorough data sharding to achieve a processing capacity of 100,000 transactions/second or more. After Pectra, the Ethereum roadmap will enter upgrades codenamed Fusaka and Glamsterdam, continuing to focus on scaling and optimization for L2 rollups. Danksharding will increase the number of data blobs per block many times over (Dencun increased from 0 to 3 blobs, Pectra increases from 3 to 6 blobs, and in the future, it may be even higher), helping to reduce costs for L2 and moving closer to the dream throughput comparable to centralized systems.

  • MEV (Maximal Extractable Value) Mitigation: A challenge for Ethereum is the situation where miners/validators exploit transaction ordering for profit (MEV). In The Scourge roadmap, Ethereum will implement measures such as Proposer-Builder Separation (PBS)—separating the roles of proposer and block builder—along with inclusion lists to ensure fairness and prevent monopolies in transaction sequencing. The goal is to create a transparent environment where no party can easily manipulate transaction order for excessive profit, thereby protecting users from MEV-related attacks (such as frontrunning and sandwich attacks).

Overall, the future of Ethereum is very bright with a dense upgrade schedule aimed at addressing all limitations: from scaling and privacy to user experience and deeper decentralization. Founder Vitalik Buterin is now fully focused on long-term research to guide Ethereum over the next 5-10 years. Vitalik's vision is to build Ethereum into an open, trustless, and globally scalable ecosystem. This means Ethereum will not only be a platform for decentralized finance but could also become the infrastructure for all sectors: decentralized governance (DAO) replacing traditional organizational models, decentralized social networks where users manage their own data, and even public services (voting, identification) applying blockchain. With solid steps and a massive developer community, Ethereum is gradually realizing its role as a “world computer”—a Web3 platform where billions of people can interact without any centralized intermediaries.

Conclusion:

Ethereum (ETH) in 2025 continues to affirm its position as a pillar of the crypto market. From both a technological and investment perspective, Ethereum possesses advantages that few competitors can match: a rich ecosystem leading the DeFi/NFT trend, an advanced technical platform with continuously improving scalability, and a sustainable token economic model (deflationary, staking rewards). For Vietnamese investors, ETH deserves to be an asset in any long-term portfolio—not only to expect value growth driven by the development of Web3 but also to diversify assets into a type of “digital gold 2.0” that is both scarce and yields returns from staking.
