Vitalik Buterin, co-founder of Ethereum (ETH), has presented a new roadmap that serves as a guideline for the blockchain's future development, revealing a significant shift in priorities from previous plans.
In light of the rapid advancements in cryptography and artificial intelligence (AI), this update, looking ahead to 2029, highlights the integration of privacy features and the assurance of quantum-resistant security as the network's top priorities.
As of 2023, the plans focused on phased developments such as The Merge, The Surge, and The Verge. However, the latest proposal has shifted to integrating Verkle trees into binary trees and PBT design, while some elements like verifiable delay functions (VDF) have been deprioritized, indicating a substantial reevaluation of technical approaches.
Buterin is promoting a "Leanification" of the entire protocol structure, aiming to rebuild it into a more robust infrastructure. This approach seeks to maintain high levels of censorship resistance and security while striving for a high-performance ecosystem.
Among the newly proposed guidelines, the enhancement of "native privacy" and "quantum resistance" stands out.
Previously treated as peripheral issues, privacy concerns will now incorporate cryptographic technologies such as keyed nonces, privacy pools, and wormholes to conceal historical data, preventing the leakage of transaction metadata.
In response to the future threat of quantum computers, the Ethereum Foundation has launched a specialized team, Ethereum PQ, to validate cryptographic algorithms in compliance with NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) standards. Research is underway to apply safety measures from wallet levels to the entire protocol at low costs while controlling the increase in signature size and verification costs.
The approach to scalability has also undergone significant changes. Moving away from a one-size-fits-all transaction processing method, the focus is now on network designs optimized for specific applications such as token transfers, decentralized trading, and privacy processing. As part of this, the adoption of native rollups, which partially undertake verification functions, and the introduction of blob gas futures markets to secure data capacity are among the topics under consideration.
Additionally, the comprehensive adoption of zero-knowledge proofs (STARKs) to streamline data processing and the incorporation of AI-driven "formal verification" as a development prerequisite are being integrated. By automating the mathematical checks of complex smart contracts and execution environments with AI, it is expected to enable flexible specification changes while ensuring high safety.
This provisional proposal is not an immediate hard fork to be applied to the network. Each proposal will undergo a verification and consensus process by researchers and the developer community before discussions on implementation proceed.
Moreover, this shift in focus, which emphasizes long-term security and privacy beyond just scalability, will provide significant guidance to all ecosystem participants, including layer 2 developers and institutional investors, in the future.
