Starting from mid-September, some artist pages on Spotify will feature a new "AI Persona" label. This label will appear on the homepage banner, personal profiles, search results, and track listings in playlists, informing listeners that the publicly displayed artist identity is generated by artificial intelligence and does not correspond to a real person.

Spotify has also decided that these accounts will not be included in editorial recommendations or personalized algorithmic suggestions by default, and will only be distributed to users who have actively followed them. The label may come from self-declaration by the artist or be added after platform review; marked accounts can appeal, and the platform plans to open a user reporting channel.

On the surface, this is just a product labeling update. In reality, it touches on a core issue that streaming music has long avoided: what the platform sells to users is a piece of sound, or a creator worth knowing, following, and financially supporting?

Spotify is marking "identity," not "production tools."

The most important boundary of this rule is that it does not judge whether a song has used AI. Real human singers can use generative tools to assist in writing lyrics, composing, or mixing without automatically receiving a label; conversely, a completely fictional singer persona, even if someone is responsible for its operation, may still be marked as an AI Persona.

This distinction is not just a matter of semantics. Today's music production is already filled with software: drum machines, sampling, and auto-tuning have not stripped creators of their identity. If the platform tries to draw lines for every degree of AI involvement, it will quickly fall into unresolvable debates. Spotify chooses to first address the deception of "packaging non-existent people as real," which has lower execution costs and is easier for ordinary listeners to understand.

The problem is that identity labels cannot resolve all controversies. A real human team can operate a fictional persona, and a real singer may delegate most of their creation to a model. If the platform only looks at avatars and profiles, it can ultimately only answer whether "the person in front exists," but cannot address whether the training data was authorized, how profits are distributed, or whether works replicate existing styles in large quantities.

Therefore, this is more like the first threshold, rather than a complete rule for AI music. It first restores the most basic right to know: users at least know whether they are following a person or a character. As for how much generative technology was used in the work itself, record companies, distributors, and platforms still need to establish more detailed disclosure standards.

Removing recommendations is more powerful than labeling.

What truly impacts AI artists is not the addition of a few words on the page, but the loss of recommended traffic. The homepage of streaming platforms, automatic playlists, and "similar artists" determine whether a large number of new songs can be discovered. An account can still upload works and can be actively searched by fans, but if it cannot enter algorithmic distribution, its growth rate and royalty scale will be limited.

This means Spotify is beginning to treat the recommendation system as a governance tool. The platform has not completely banned AI virtual singers but has returned the choice to users: those who want to listen can still do so, and the algorithm will no longer disguise it as an ordinary newcomer pushed to everyone. Compared to a "one-size-fits-all" removal, this approach retains experimental space; compared to merely adding labels while continuing recommendations, it truly changes the incentives.

Execution will still be challenging. Realistic avatars can be replaced with abstract illustrations, account profiles can avoid claiming to be real people, and the operators behind them may continuously appeal. Misjudging real niche singers will directly harm their exposure and income; failing to identify bulk-generated accounts will undermine the credibility of the rules. Spotify needs to publicly clarify the criteria for identification and ensure that the appeal speed keeps pace with the music release rhythm.

Longer-term changes may occur in the term "artist" itself. Virtual idols did not only emerge in the AI era; band names often overshadow any single member. What listeners truly resent may not be the fictional aspect, but the platform allowing fictional identities to gain trust through real narratives without disclosing their origins.

The AI Persona label at least acknowledges that this trust is valuable. Music platforms previously only needed to answer "can this song be played," but now must also answer "why is it recommended to you, who is benefiting, and does the person you think you know actually exist?" The step Spotify has taken is incomplete, but the direction is clear: algorithms cannot shape stars while pretending to be just a player.

For real musicians, the value of the rules also depends on whether the platform can avoid creating new unfairness. If established artists find it easier to verify their identities while newly launched independent musicians with little information are frequently misjudged, the governance costs will fall on the weakest group. Spotify needs to disclose the processing cycles for labeling and appeals and distinguish between "not enough information" and "already identified as AI identity." Transparency should not only be directed at listeners but also at creators whose exposure opportunities are determined by algorithms.

Record companies and distributors cannot shift all responsibility to the platform. Account creation, copyright materials, and production personnel information often enter the system from the distribution stage; if upstream information remains vague, Spotify can only rely on appearance and behavioral signals to make guesses. A more reasonable approach is to separately record identity disclosures, song production information, and rights statements: a virtual persona can publicly acknowledge itself as a character, and a work that uses AI tools can also list real authors. The more detailed the rules, the less need there is to use the crude choice of "real or AI" to adjudicate all creations.

Ultimately, whether listeners accept virtual singers should be determined by the works and clear disclosures together, rather than having the platform pretend they do not exist. The restraint of the recommendation system is to prevent concealment from gaining additional rewards, not to declare that virtual creations have no value. If this boundary can be maintained, AI music still has experimental space, and the identities of real musicians do not have to compete in an opaque manner with bulk-generated accounts in the information flow.
