Infidelity, Escape, and a Million-Dollar Divorce: The $730 Million Settlement That Shook the Dubai Royal Family
No one would have imagined that this story would end in an international conflict and a lawsuit for millions of dollars. For fifteen years, the couple formed by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, ruler of Dubai, and Princess Haya bint Al Husein, daughter of the King of Jordan, presented themselves to the world as a symbol of unity.
However, behind the official photos and high-society events, life in the palace hid an oppressive reality that became unsustainable over time. What seemed like a solid marriage began to crack silently, ultimately leading to a scandal.
The Story of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Princess Haya
The marriage between Sheikh Mohammed and Princess Haya was celebrated in 2004 and served to project an image of openness in Dubai. The young woman, educated at the University of Oxford and an Olympic equestrian athlete, did not fit the traditional profile of royal families in the region.
She granted interviews to international media, dressed according to Western fashion, and led various humanitarian initiatives in different parts of the world. For over a decade, the couple shared the spotlight in the most prestigious equestrian competitions on the planet, such as the famous Ascot races in England.
This shared passion for horses and their international lifestyle allowed them to build a vast network of contacts and public presence both in the Arab world and in Europe, presenting themselves to public opinion as an influential and fully established marriage.
However, the relationship between them broke down when the ruler of the emirate discovered that his wife was maintaining a secret relationship with a member of his private security team, a former British soldier.
The revelation completely shattered the trust in the couple and led to an extremely tense and hostile daily environment within the family residence. From that moment on, coexistence within the palace became unsustainable due to the constant control and intense arguments with the sovereign's entourage.
Mutual distrust and strict surveillance ultimately sealed the definitive end of the marital relationship, marking the beginning of a personal and legal conflict that would soon cross territorial borders.
The Princess's Fear and Her Subsequent Escape
The woman's fear grew drastically upon learning in detail what had happened with two of her husband's daughters, the young Shamsa and Latifa. Both had attempted to escape family control at different times but ended up being captured in international operations and returned to Dubai, where they remained detained and isolated according to complaints filed in British courts.
After learning about these events, the royal family member began to report a series of direct intimidations in her daily life within the official residence. On several occasions, she found threatening notes on her own bed, discovered firearms intentionally left in her room, and received constant anonymous warnings assuring her that her personal safety and the custody of her two children were in serious jeopardy.
The situation worsened significantly when it was confirmed that her personal phone and her lawyers' devices had been infected with the military espionage program Pegasus. This revelation confirmed that local intelligence was monitoring each of her movements and communications, demonstrating that the safety of her environment was compromised while they remained within the territory controlled by the emir.
Faced with an imminent risk to her physical integrity and that of the children, she organized a secret escape plan in May 2019 with the support of diplomats. She managed to travel urgently to Europe to finally settle in London, where she sought political asylum and formal legal protection from the UK authorities.
The Most Expensive Divorce Settlement in the UK
The extensive judicial process was finally resolved in the High Court of London through a historic ruling that set a definitive precedent. The British justice system ordered the ruler of Dubai to pay a total sum of $730 million to his ex-wife and their two minor children, immediately becoming the highest amount ever set for a divorce in the country's history.
In the official ruling, the court expressly clarified that most of that money was not intended to finance a lifestyle of luxury or extravagance. The overwhelming sum aimed primarily to cover a sophisticated permanent security scheme to protect the family for the rest of their lives against possible retaliation or kidnappings abroad.
The judge in charge of the case fully considered that the main threat to the safety of the plaintiff and her two children came directly from the emir himself. For that reason, the ruling allocated specific funds for the purchase of armored vehicles, hiring trained private security, and installing technological protection systems in their residences in England.
The resolution also included guaranteed annual budgets for the maintenance and education of the two minor children until they reach adulthood. Additionally, it contemplated financial compensation to cover the loss of valuable jewelry, artworks, and personal belongings that the mother had to abandon hastily when fleeing the royal palace.
